Early Retirement in Thailand – brilliant move or a blunder?

Retire at 54 years of age and be happier?

Well aged 54 and separated from my wife and see my friends, weight gain and health problems made me think. I was weight gain so I was not happy with the direction my life was headed, then what can I do? I started thinking of alternatives.

Retirement? Nobody wants to talk or even think. Perhaps it makes us feel more if we do this. So many years passed and things not change. We do the same thing, eating the same food until the doctor tells us to make some changes, and it continues, we will live forever. Unfortunately we can not live forever and we must think of retirement before we kick the bucket. After everything you've worked all these years anyways?

Well, to cut to the chase, I thought of going to the Dominican Republic to live. But after being twice, I find that the power was unreliable, there were safety concerns, doctors and dentists are not easily accessible and it is expensive.

With time on my hands, I am sitting at my computer and did some research. and found that Thailand is a retirement destination People. In fact, I read that Chiang Mai was the most popular retirement destinations across Southeast Asia.

Hundreds of hours of research later methodical planner George and he came with the best countries for retirement and also the best city to retire in the entire Asia South-East and perhaps the world. Chiang Mai, a city of several hundred thousand inhabitants. Located about 420 miles north of Bangkok and less polluted, less expensive, and less traffic than Bangkok and cooler than Bangkok. Chiang Mai, unknown to most North Americans still visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists annually, and hosts thousands of foreigners who have visited here, found to their liking and decided to make this their new home.

I arrived in Bangkok November 23, 2004 and this is where we will start our real life experiences, adventures and misadventures.

After the tiring journey, I decided to stay over a few nights in Bangkok. While well-rested, I was ready to continue from Chiang Mai.

A Quick One flight plan an hour or 13 hours of relaxation process that we would be? With the extra luggage I would be particularly computers and golf clubs, I decided on the train. The bumpy ride in a comfortable seat reclining (2nd Class A / C) me back $ 15 throughout the U.S. dollar, which included two meals, refreshments and a cake. I was favorably impressed when I visited the apartment and proceeded to book. So, three weeks at the hotel and then to the Residence which would run about $ 250 per month with utilities and water included, and breakfast extra. The apartment was internet available in rooms for a surcharge, or Internet site, a spa on-site massage, rooftop pool, bike rental, beauty salon and a restaurant that had entertainment that evening. Television has a wide selection of channels via satellite, there was free parking on site, and a convenient location near the central lawn. Then she everything

Other retirees recommend staying in a condo or a serviced apartment for 6 months or more to familiarize myself with the city prior any sort of arrangements with long-term lease.

I met a lovely lady name Nichaya. She was a hairdresser during the day and my guide, companion, means of transportation during the evening. The tsunami struck a few days before we planned to return to Chiang Mai. We lost a camera, some clothes, some pictures, but to return. She handled the situation calmly and were unharmed. If you are interested in is what happened.

Tremor at about 3 pm I woke up and I was wondering if it was an earthquake. Around 4:30 another jolt. I woke up again. About 7 o'clock one major boom sounded like a gun fighter, then a minute later, another boom as strong.

I thought it may be terrorists by the pool and I recommended to stay in the room. Nichaya told me to leave the room. We grabbed a few valuables, passport and left the hotel. Our hotel room was located on the lower level facing the pool which is less than about 6 feet that the hotel lobby. We have accrued to the pool, the stairs to the lobby and main entrance. As we crossed the road to the water gushed out of the hotel and on the street. So the water level needed to be at least 6 feet high just to reach the lobby. Motorcycles, cars were under way in the streets all defined by the sudden flood of water. We were on higher ground across the street and have removed their shoes and I rolled my pants.

After an hour or so the water level began to recede. It was about this time when a motorcycle cop drove by and warned everyone that there would be another wave coming soon. He was right. Another wave was similar across the hall and into the street again. Now, the water level was back to where it was before and we could do nothing but wait.

The day before the tsunami struck, we were on a boat cruise to Phi Phi. Two days before the tsunami struck, we rented motor boats on the beach. If this had happened one days earlier or on a different date, then you would not read this article.

When water levels have receded and found safety we re-entered our hotel lobby to find a young boy who was in the pool when the tsunami struck the lie of the floor to someone trying to revive him. Unfortunately, the boy did not survive. The hotel staff were totally unprepared. Nice people as they are had no clue what to do. The guests were screaming, call a doctor, I called you a doctor? The hotel staff smiled politely, but either did not understand or could not happen to anyone.

When we approached our room we found he was devastated. The window broken out by water, the door broken, mattresses and furniture upside down and the room inaccessible.

Hotel guests were evacuated to higher ground by buses and trucks. We sat by the roadside on the heights of expectation. The hotels have been found alternative accommodation in nearby Phuket, which was about a half drive away from Patong. We left the others who were sitting by the roadside and went to a few cabins hill Wan was able to greet people, speak their language and explain the situation. We were offered refreshments and a place to lay down and wait.

Only when we arrived at the airport a day later that we realize the true extent of the devastation. There were tourists at the airport with cuts, bandages, broken bones, but worse still there were many people missing.

Wan and I were unharmed but have learned something over the other by experience. We showed how we respond in emergencies and we also learned something about hotels and Thais. After writing to the hotel management of the Patong Merlin hotel at least 6 times on this site and in their sister hotel in Phuket which was not damaged by the tsunami, we have received a response after 5 weeks. They did not attempt to clean any clothes left behind, has not tried return all the content has not even tried to contact us by letter or e-mail saying sorry for this experience. We stayed there for one week $ 100 U.S. per night and will never stay in a hotel Merlin again.

Would it have been handled differently or better in America North?

Although a one-hour flight back to Bangkok for some shopping and then the short one hour flight back to Chiang Mai, my new home.

Now life is different. Wan and I live in his home town with his daughter and her mother. Her husband died and she was the one they depend. Wan a young beauty salon in her home town.

What is different now?

Well, I learned to live here with less. There adjustments to get here from $ 80 per month and excellent accommodations can be had for $ 200 a month. I mean excellent similar to a hotel room, television with cable or satellite, swimming pool, onsite restaurant and a good location with cleaning twice week or every week.

I eat Thai food now with chicken wings, French fries, and a little soap potato house several times a week. I read that Thailand can make anything taste delicious. This is true.

They use fresh ingredients in their kitchen. There are many nearby farms and produce from fruits, vegetables are abundant year around and very cheap. There is also a fantastic selection of seafood to choose from. You can buy the seafood market or from a large grocery store where choice is varied and fresh. If you want, you can choose a live fish, continue with your shopping and when you pull your look cooked fish at home for dinner or lunch.

I recently bought pineapples to the big grocery store. Large, fresh, mouth watering pineapple. Ten baht each, or 25 U.S. cents each. They will be cut if for you and put the styrofoam packaging with cellophane free.

Return to cook. The reason Thai food is so delicious is partly the freshness of ingredients, but especially the sauces. Simple rice cooked with fried vegetables is a delicious meal with the right sauce added. Something to watch for if you do visit here. Two small bowls are presented with many meals. It has a green paste / sauce and the other to a pulp red / sauce. Is added to fish or meat by way of soaking or by placing a small amount on a spoon in the bowl, then your food. WATCH OUT! Red is spicy and should be added in measured quantities. Green should not be added to all unless you are Thai or Mexican in my opinion. Green is the hottest of the two and can make you sweat, quickly reach a glass of water and go to the toilet middle of the night and not brushing your teeth.

So many things to do than I can even list all.

Cable TV with 54 channels for $ 8.25 U.S. per month. The cost of cable installation is about $ 7 and U.S. $ 2.50 supplement to the second TV. Internet and telephone for about $ 20 total months.

People work hard. Many have their own business and work 16 hours a day 7 days a week.
The activities consist in May the creation of a table and some chairs and noodle sales cooked meat, fruit or a small convenience store to home cooked food on the side.

I see parents take their children to school which is expensive here. About 80,000 baht or U.S. $ 2,000 per year for tuition, clothing and textbooks for a child of 7 years. They teach English to children, even at this age. Parents must work hard Damm to pay for schooling, but they are hoping that their children do well jobs and a better life with more opportunities.

Cats and dogs here are numerous. Almost everyone in our neighborhood is a cat or dog or both. Our neighbor has 6 cats and kittens over 2 did not work full time. It is difficult for him but I know he loves cats. He proposed to give us some but we have no space.

So, to summarize things. It is not perfect here. You can find something to complain if you look hard enough but for me it's as close to perfection as I'll find.

I can tell you a thing or two I do not like and I could tell you hundreds of things I love. I am a picky person so if I like it here and have very little or nothing to complain while I'm sure others will love it here too.

So enamored by Chiang Mai I am that I have created a website to help others retire. The first to come here on vacation and then to retire here.
